After the riots and demonstrations following the overtourism Spain has taken a decision that has surprised Europe. Starting from 1st October to visit the country, even for just one day, tourists will have to provide a series of personal and sensitive data. The rules are changing, as announced by the government, monitoring the entry of visitors in ways never implemented before. A country that has always been known for its sunny and welcoming nature, is partially closing its doors to try to limit the damage caused by mass tourism that seems too invasive.
In 2023, Spain recorded approximately 85 million tourists or 18.7% more than in 2022. This meant a record tourist spending of 108,662 million euros, which reveals that each tourist on average paid 1,278 euros during their holiday. The data confirmed that the majority of recent visitors come from the United Kingdom, followed by France and then Italy in third place.
